Spending time getting to know your characters, especially your protagonists, is well worth the time spent in the planning stage of your story.

One tool that I’ve recently discovered – and swear by – is the Character Building Tool by the team at One Stop For Writers.

What follows is an example of the benefits of story planning. I’m not a planner – I’m way too impatient and want to jump in at the deep end – but using the Character Building Tool (CBT) forced me to ask questions about my heroine I hadn’t considered, including her backstory, her character arc, her motivations, and yes – the one I hate – what she looks like.

At the end of my planning session I had a 19-page planning document ready to go (which I could conveniently copy into Scrivener to access as I need it).

Here are seven things I found in the Character Planning Tool that improved my story planning and will allow me to writer a quicker – and cleaner – first draft (the images are straight from the CPT):

1. Character Arc – the cool thing about character arcs in the CBT is that once you work through all the questions, you get a Blueprint to refer back to as you write (remember, everything in the CBT is linked to the amazing thesaurus’ Angela and Beck have written)…

2. Motivation – I thought I knew a lot about motivation till I started playing with the CBT and had to think about internal and external motivations, along with the negative and positive traits of my heroine (the column on the right guides you through the process and offers suggestions if you need help)…

3. Emotion: this is a biggie and the more I worked through the CBT the more I learnt about my heroine; what lies she tells herself – her wound – and the negative and positive qualities this engenders in her personality (the CBT is a huge resource but the beauty of the tool is that it carries information from one section to the next, and builds a complete picture of your character)…

4. What lies does your character tell herself to protect herself from the traumas of her wound? By working your way through a set of questions you’re forced to think more deeply about your character and what makes her the way she is…

5. Getting inside your character’s head is always a challenge but it’s where you need to go if you want your reader coming back for more. If you’ve read this far, then you know that fleshing out your character means thinking deeply about why she acts like she does (and how she will eventually forced to confront her fears in order to move forward)…

6. What makes your character tick? How does she act under pressure? What will your reader learn by your heroine’s actions (or lack of action)? You’re character is really starting to take shape now and, if you’re like me, you’re already writing snippets of dialogue and feeling a tad emotional about your heroine’s suffering…

7.  There’s a lot more to the CBT, but I couldn’t resist sharing this one with you. Giving your heroine a quirk or two makes her loveable (and believeable)…

There’s so much more to the Character Building Tool – like the 19-page pdf I downloaded at the end of my session – but I came away knowing a whole lot more about my heroine, her motivations and her background.
