Who wants to be an entrepreneur?

There seems to be an ever-burgeoning interest in entrepreneurship as we bed down into the twenty-first century reality of multi-skilling and limited traditional employment options. So I sat down with my friend, Col, and we came up with a checklist of what you need to survive and thrive as an entrepreneur in this brave new world:

  1. A passionate heart
  2. To have a dream
  3. Be able to dance to your own tune
  4. What is your talent?
  5. Define your purpose
  6. Plan your path
  7. Willingness to be vulnerable
  8. Curiosity
  9. Give yourself permission
  10. Seek out mentors – people who are walking your path
  11. Be open to failure and disappointment
  12. Improve
  13. Be enterprising
  14. Ask questions
  15. Practise resilience – be a reasonable adventurer

By developing and practising these qualities, entrepreneurship will find you. Go about your business and your chances will come. Create your own opportunities for satisfaction and the rest will follow. Easy? There’s more. Be guided in your journey by the following six foundations:

  1. Question the nature of knowledge
  2. Form close friendships and understand others’ world view
  3. Trust your value judgements
  4. Be tolerant of ambiguity
  5. Show an uncommon interest in the commonplace and see opportunities in the familiar
  6. Nurture your sense of humour – have fun along the way

Build these foundations into everything you do and enjoy the journey. It’s all we’ve got.

Col’s book, The Naked Educator, is available for free download on Amazon for the next five days. All he asks is that you leave a review. Don’t forget to check out his blog, and his podcast series on iTunes of the same name. You won’t regret it.

A bonus episode of Writer on the Road, where Col and I chat about the above, will be available here in the next few days (as soon as my daughter gets home and produces the show:))

A special note:

As I publish this post, a notification has come through that Joanna Penn ( is featuring on The Digital Entrepreneur podcast, in an episode titled, ‘How Joanna Penn Designed the Lifestyle (and Career) of Her Dreams. I’m off to sit in the sun and listen to my mentor. See, Col, I’m following your advice already:)
